Happy World Thyroid Day 2026 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Official Statement by the Thyroid Awareness and Support Initiative (TASI) on World Thyroid Day and the International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW)
Theme: Thyroid and Nutrition
Today, as we mark World Thyroid Day and International Thyroid Awareness Week, the Thyroid Awareness and Support Initiative (TASI) joins the global community to shine a light on one of the body’s most important yet most overlooked glands — the thyroid.
Though small and butterfly-shaped, the thyroid plays a huge role in the body. It regulates metabolism, energy, heart rate, body temperature, growth, reproductive health, and emotional well-being.
This year’s theme — Thyroid and Nutrition — reminds us that nutrition and lifestyle matter. Essential nutrients like iodine, selenium, iron, zinc, vitamin D, and B12 all support healthy thyroid function. Balanced nutrition, rest, exercise, hydration, and stress management also play a vital role in protecting thyroid health.
According to researchers, over 200 million people globally are living with some form of thyroid disorder, and around 60% of them remain undiagnosed.
Yet many people continue to live with thyroid disorders that go unrecognised and misunderstood, because of myths, stigma, and low awareness — especially in Africa, where thyroid disorders are widely believed to be underreported.
At TASI, we believe awareness saves lives.
This is why we call on everyone to learn about the thyroid, talk openly about thyroid health, encourage screening, support those living with thyroid disorders, and share accurate information. Early detection is always key.
Together, we can break the silence on thyroid health.
Together, we can build a thyroid-healthy society.
Your thyroid matters. Your health matters.
