Stories of Hope
Mr Dauda- 56 years old.
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2009, I passed through a lot of trauma and fear due to the associated symptoms and the fact that I nobody around me had knowledge about what I was passing through due to lack of awareness. I consulted a lot of doctors, yet no solution nor improvement. The swelling on my neck was causing me embarrassments and rejection in my business deals as a contractor. People didn’t like doing business with me because I was looking very sickly. One faithful day, a wife to my former boss saw me and gave me the contact of TASI, that they will give me solution to my problem and direct me to the proper experts that will handle my case. Immediately I contacted the number and the founder picked. After narrating my problems to her, the counsel and the encouragement she gave me was very therapeutic. She referred me to a specialist who recommended some diagnosis and later treated me, in few months I was declared fit for surgery, I had a very successful surgery, precisely in November 2018, today I can go about my business without embarrasement, hale and hearty. Today I am an outstanding volunteer and a support group member of TASI.
I started noticing a swelling on my neck, gradually its started growing bigger. I went to the hospital, they gave me some drugs but it did not go. Herbal drug sellers convinced me that they will give me drugs that will melt the lump on my neck, I believed them, but after spending a lot of money with no improvement I became more worried. One day someone told me that she will take me to a doctor in the eastern part of Nigeria who will treat me,I agreed and followed her. When we got there ,the acclaimed Doctor injected a black substance on my thyroid, claiming it will melt the lump. Instead of melting the lump, it afflicted a kind of physical wound on me, which the man was not able to treat for about 4 months I was there, rather it got worse. I left that place in frustration with the wound. I treated that wound, dressing it every other day with the help of a nurse friend of mine and just resolved to pray and believe God for my healing and solution. One Sunday a sister in church approached me and gave me a number to call, that the NGO will help me out with my problem. Without wasting time, I discussed with my husband and we called, Madam Iruoma first of all talked to me and arrested all the fear in me. I booked an appointment with her and she directed me to the doctor, I ran all my tests and went through a period of treatment, finally I had my surgery in August 2019. Today, I am free and have faced my business. I cannot thank God enough, how he used TASI NGO to restore my life and my confidence.
My name is Mr Damilda, deaf but not dumb. I cannot explain my joy the day Mrs Iruoma, founder of TASI and her team came to our deaf community for an awareness campaign, with a sign language interpreter. I had long been diagnosed of thyroid disease with a massive goiter on my neck, already the doctor I was seeing advised I do thyroidectomy, but I was afraid because that was what killed my elder sister. My family family member didn’t approve nor encourage me to go ahead. when Mrs Iruoma mentioned that she is a survivor, my hope to survive the surgery rose. I met her privately after the program, she talked to me and allayed my fears. I talked to my children and siblings, they still didn’t agree with me and raised a lot of concerns, but my spirit accepted what Madam Iruoma told me. It was only my daughter that supported and encouraged me and I went for the surgery and came out successful. I thank god for saving my life through TASI. Even my relative could not believe it. I wish government and people will support TASI so that they can do more.
I was diagnosed of a massive goiter on my neck with a normal thyroid, the doctor I was seeing advised that I should undergo a surgery to remove it ,that I didn’t need treatment, I was afraid. I carried this swelling for almost five years with all the embarrassments and stigma I went through in my place of work and other social settings. That faithful day I was listening to the radio and I heard Mrs Iruoma telling her stories as a thyroid patient, and how she overcame it. I quickly copied the contact number she dropped and called her after the program, she gave an appointment, we met and she encouraged me to remove it and talked me out of fear. She sent me to the doctors that handle her own. I was examined with proper diagnoses and was booked for surgery, I prayed and went for the surgery, very successful. I was discharged after four days and resumed work after two weeks. It was like a dream. I encourage every thyroid patient to lay down their fears and follow instructions from Mrs Iruoma , its shall be well with them. LONG LIVE TASI.
My name is Mrs Juliana, I am 62 years old. I have carried this evil load on my neck for 19 years. The doctors I saw In the past all recommended surgery for me but I was scared because I had never seen anybody that survived this kind of surgery. I was taking native medicine as they convinced me it will help to melt the lump, instead it was increasing in size. I cannot talk of the embarrassement I received with this goiter, in my neighbourhood, market and family buses. Infact people use to describe me as that woman that has load on her neck. At times people won’t like to associate with me. With all the failed concoction I took without improvement, I personally made up my mind to remove the lump, but no direction on where to go. One day my daughter called me to announce that she saw where they posted “FREE GOITRE SURGERY “ she copied the number and we called , we were directed on how to see Madam , she later directed us to the hospital and at last I am free of the evil load. The rest is history. I thank God for TASI team, they are wonderful,God will bless them and bless the surgeon for saving my life. Honestly, its like a dream, I have to start wearing me jewelries again . God is good!
My name is blessing, married with 3 children . I started noticing small growth on one side of my neck when I was pregnant of my third baby, after delivery, it gradually started becoming bigger, my husband started abusing me both verbally and emotionally ,telling me that this thing was not on my neck when he married me. Peace and love left my home. I started seeking for medical help. Doctor sent me for several tests, at last he advised that I should remove ,that it was a simple goiter. He said he did not know where he can refer me except go to teaching hospital. I went there, there they put me on que with a repeated visits I got more frustrated. My husband complained that I was not good for going out again. Along the line he impregnated another lady and was bold enough to bring her into our matrimonial home and threw me and my kids away. I went back to my parents. One day, as I was browsing the internet and saw a poster advertising “FREE THYROID SURGERY”. The next day I went straight to trace the place, I got there and I was directed to the doctor for examination and he declared me fit for the surgery. I prepared for it, finally it was very succecful on 4th October 2018. I thank God almighty and Aunty Iruoma for her love and kindness throughout the period of my surgery and recovery. Now my confidence and beauty are back.
